Cristobal by Balenciaga (1998)
For years, Balenciaga Cristobal was the quiet secret of perfume collectors. Created by Olivier Gillotin in 1998, it was an unusual fragrance for its time: a fig opening woven into airy whipped vanilla, surrounded by powdery florals and dry woods. Reviewers called it underrated and slightly unusual, which is exactly why it built a devoted fanbase.
When Balenciaga relaunched its fragrance line in September 2025 with ten brand new compositions, this original Cristobal was not among them. A different “Cristóbal 2025” exists now, but it is an oud composition with nothing in common with the 1998 original. Authentic vintage bottles trade hands at premium prices on resale markets.
Our interpretation revisits the original 1998 formulation that fans have been searching for, built as a long-lasting Eau de Parfum, made in the EU.

The Scent
It opens with that distinctive fig leaf note. Green, fresh, slightly milky, an unusual choice in 1998 perfumery. Then the vanilla arrives, but not in the syrupy way you might expect. It is whipped, airy, almost cloud-like, giving Cristobal a light sweetness that feels more sophisticated than gourmand.
The florals follow, growing increasingly powdery as the fragrance develops. Peony does most of the heavy lifting in the heart, joined by a clove-like edge from carnation and creamy jasmine. By the dry-down, you are left with smooth sandalwood, patchouli, and that lingering powdery vanilla character. The kind of skin scent that smells expensive in a quiet way.
Notes
Top: Fig Leaf, Carnation, Bergamot
Heart: Peony, Freesia, Jasmine, Honeysuckle, Lily of the Valley
Base: Vanilla, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Amber
How Our Version Compares
No dupe is identical, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we captured is the distinctive fig-and-whipped-vanilla character of the 1998 Cristobal, with the same powdery floral heart and warm wood dry-down. Built as Eau de Parfum at up to 40% concentration, typically 7 to 9 hours on skin, longer on fabric. Better wear time than the original, which fans noted was on the moderate side.
For Fans Of
Vintage powdery vanilla fragrances. Anyone who loved Cristobal the first time around and has watched resale prices climb. Wearers who appreciate unusual openings (the fig leaf is unmistakable) paired with comforting bases. Autumn and winter wear, though it works year round.
Common Questions
Why is Balenciaga Cristobal so hard to find now?
Balenciaga discontinued its entire original perfume line, including the 1998 Cristobal, in the years before its 2025 relaunch. The new collection released in September 2025 includes a “Cristóbal 2025” but it is a completely different oud-based fragrance, not the original we are referencing here.
What does fig leaf actually smell like?
Fig leaf is green, slightly milky, and softly aromatic. Not the sweet fruity smell of a ripe fig, but the smell of the tree itself: leaves, stems, and the underripe character that bridges between green and gentle creaminess.
Is this fragrance powdery?
Yes, in the heart and dry-down. The carnation and powdery florals give it that vintage powdery quality, but the fig opening and vanilla keep it from feeling dated.
