The Story Behind the Scent

Byredo founder Ben Gorham built the house around personal memory and mood, and Bal d’Afrique reflects a nostalgic, cosmopolitan idea of Paris meeting African warmth. It was designed to feel joyful and radiant, a scent that mixes fresh citrus, soft flowers and warm woods into something easy to wear yet distinctive.

The balance is what makes it special. Bergamot, neroli and a touch of African marigold give a bright, slightly green opening, violet and jasmine soften the middle, and a base of cedar, vetiver, amber and musk adds a warm, woody depth. It reads fresh and sunny up top but sensual underneath, which is why it works across seasons and on anyone. Our version captures that same bright to warm arc at a fraction of the niche price.

How Our Version Compares to the Original

We do not claim this is identical, because no interpretation ever is. What we have captured is the original’s bright citrus and marigold opening and its warm cedar and vetiver base. Built at up to 40% perfume oil, ours projects clearly early on and lingers well on skin and clothing, keeping close to the character of the niche original.

How it Smells

The opening is bright and slightly green, with bergamot, neroli and a touch of marigold giving a fresh, sunny lift. It feels radiant and elegant from the first spray.

As it settles, violet and jasmine soften the middle with a light floral warmth, keeping it fresh while adding a sensual edge. This is where the fresh opening starts moving toward the warmer base.

The base is warm and woody, with cedar, vetiver, amber and musk giving a smooth, sensual depth. It dries down close to the skin, leaving a warm woody trail with a soft floral glow.

No. This is our own interpretation of the Bal d’Afrique scent profile, rebuilt at up to 40% perfume oil. It is not the branded fragrance and does not use the same formula.

Is Bal D’Afrique a fresh scent?

Partly. It opens fresh and bright with citrus and marigold, but the warm cedar, vetiver and amber base gives it a sensual depth, so it is fresh and warm at once.
