The Story Behind the Scent

Ben Gorham founded Byredo in Stockholm in 2006, with all production based in Sweden. For Bal d’Afrique, he commissioned Jerome Epinette to capture the spirit of 1920s Paris embracing African culture: jazz nights, artistic salons, dancing in dimly lit rooms. The African marigold (Tagetes minuta) at the heart is the signature material, paired with sun-warmed citrus opening and refined cedarwood-vetiver base. Two decades later, Bal d’Afrique remains one of the most successful niche fragrances of the past 15 years.
