Grand Bal joined Dior’s La Collection Privée in 2012, composed by Francois Demachy as an homage to Christian Dior’s lifelong fascination with the great Parisian ball gowns of the 1950s. The brief was a luminous jasmine bouquet at the centre of a radiant floral composition, evoking the moment when a ball gown unfurls and the wearer becomes the centre of attention. Demachy built the composition around three exceptional sourced ingredients: Grasse jasmine, Mayotte ylang ylang essence, and New Caledonian sandalwood essence. The result reads polished and luxurious, distinctly unisex in the haute parfumerie tradition. Our interpretation respects that radiant floral profile.

How It Smells

The opening is bright and slightly fruity, bergamot leading with mandarin adding citrus lift and a quick hedione brightness that primes the nose for the floral bouquet to come. Within ten minutes the heart unfolds: Grasse jasmine takes a dominant lead, rendered as creamy and slightly indolic in the great French jasmine tradition, with Mayotte ylang ylang adding soft exotic floral support and Tunisian orange blossom contributing a quiet honeyed warmth.
