When Cartier released Must de Cartier Gold in 2015, the idea was to give the 1981 original a lighter, more contemporary partner. The galbanum that defined the parent fragrance returned, but softened. Osmanthus replaced the original’s pineapple, jasmine took a larger role, and the vanilla finish became less powdered, more transparent. The result divided fans: some appreciated the modern polish, others missed the depth of the classic Must. Today, Must de Cartier Gold has been largely phased out of Cartier’s main markets, available only on certain regional sites and through specialist retailers. That makes it the kind of fragrance our interpretations are particularly useful for.

How It Smells

The opening still has the green galbanum signature, but reads cleaner and less intense than the 1981 original. Green leaves add a fresh herbal lift, and the floral heart appears more quickly: osmanthus brings its trademark apricot leather character, jasmine adds creamy white floral depth, and the overall impression is more polished than dramatic. The base is softer than the parent fragrance: vanilla, warm but not heavy, with the woody amber accord pared back. It reads as a daytime, more office friendly version of Must de Cartier, slightly more linear but easier to wear.

Because the original Must de Cartier Gold has been pulled from many markets, sourcing it has become increasingly difficult and expensive. Our European Union production at 40 percent perfume oil concentration captures the cleaner galbanum osmanthus profile that defined the original. The composition is simpler than the parent fragrance, which means our high oil approach particularly suits it: every note has more space to develop, and the osmanthus apricot character holds longer through the wearing.
