L’Envol De Cartier
39,00 €
Mathilde Laurent’s unusual honey, iris and guaiac wood masculine. Warm, slightly mystical, anchored by smoky woods and powdered iris. Cartier’s modern men’s fragrance, rebuilt at 40 percent oil.
Honey, Iris, and Guaiac Wood
L’Envol de Cartier launched in 2016 with one of the more unusual briefs in mainstream men’s perfumery. Mathilde Laurent took honey, a note rarely featured in masculine compositions, and built around it a structure of iris, patchouli, guaiac wood, and resinous warmth. The result smells nothing like the typical aquatic or fougere masculine of its era. It is sweet without being gourmand, woody without being aggressive, slightly mystical in feel. The marketing called it a “magic potion” for men. Whatever the language, the perfume itself is interesting enough to deserve attention.
How It Smells
The opening is sweet but balanced, the honey reading as ripe and slightly waxy rather than syrupy. Within minutes the iris arrives, soft and slightly powdered, adding a cool grey violet character that smooths the sweetness. Guaiac wood comes through the heart with its characteristic smoky balsamic depth, and patchouli grounds the composition with a warm earth note. The drydown is musky and creamy, with the honey still present but quieter, the woods doing most of the work. It is the kind of fragrance you discover layer by layer over a wearing, rather than one that throws all its cards in the first thirty seconds.
The Notes
Top: honey, citruses.
Heart: iris, patchouli.
Base: guaiac wood, musk, resinous notes.
How Our Version Compares
Honey is notoriously difficult to handle in perfumery. It can read as wax, as urine, as candy, depending on what surrounds it. Mathilde Laurent calibrated her version carefully, and a faithful interpretation has to do the same. Our European Union production keeps the honey balanced against the iris and guaiac at 40 percent perfume oil concentration. That density extends the drydown phase, which is where L’Envol earns most of its compliments.
Common Questions
Will it smell like sweet candy?
No. The honey here is the natural waxy variety, not the sugary candied version, and the iris and woods anchor it firmly into a masculine register. It reads warm and slightly mysterious rather than sweet.
Is this office appropriate?
Generally yes, in moderate application. The composition is unusual enough to draw attention but not loud enough to overwhelm a meeting. Two sprays is typically the right amount.
Best season?
Autumn and winter, when the honey and guaiac warmth has room to develop. In high summer it can read slightly heavy. Spring works fine.
How does it compare to L’Envol’s lighter EDT version?
The original is the eau de parfum, which is what our interpretation is built around. The newer eau de toilette version is fresher and more citrus forward; our concentration follows the deeper, more honey driven EDP profile.
How long does it last on skin?
Six to nine hours at our 40 percent oil concentration, with the guaiac wood and patchouli base extending well into the next morning on clothing. The honey and iris stay audible through most of the wearing.
