Egoiste
39,00 €
Jacques Polge’s 1990 confident masculine. Damask rose, rosewood and cinnamon over a sandalwood, leather, tobacco and amber drydown. The classical Chanel masculine, rebuilt at 40 percent oil.
The 1990 Statement, Reframed
Jacques Polge composed Egoiste in 1990, named after a French expression for self-assured confidence. The composition broke from the macho aquatic trends of late 1980s masculines and instead delivered a sumptuous floral oriental built around damask rose, sandalwood, and a spicy heart of coriander, cinnamon, and tobacco. The famous launch advertisement, set in a Cuban hotel with women shouting “Egoiste” from balconies, made the perfume notorious. Three and a half decades later, Egoiste remains in continuous production on Chanel.com and continues to attract a devoted following among collectors who appreciate classical masculine perfumery that refuses to apologise for its richness. Our interpretation respects the original character.
How It Smells
The opening is fresh but slightly warm, mandarin and coriander leading with a quick burst of spice that primes the nose for the depth to come. Within fifteen minutes the heart appears, and this is where Egoiste reveals its singular character. Damask rose dominates, rendered as deep and slightly jammy rather than fresh and dewy, with carnation, rosewood, and cinnamon spicing the floral heart in directions most masculines avoid. The base completes the composition with sandalwood, leather, tobacco, vanilla, and amber. It reads sophisticated, slightly retro in the best sense, and undeniably confident.
The Notes
Top: mandarin, coriander.
Heart: damask rose, rosewood, carnation, cinnamon.
Base: sandalwood, leather, tobacco, vanilla, amber.
How Our Version Compares
Egoiste’s character lives in the rose sandalwood interaction, which is the part of the composition that needs proper materials to read correctly. Our European Union production at 40 percent perfume oil concentration uses quality rose and sandalwood accords, preserving the spiced floral oriental signature that defines the original. The composition reads recognisably like Polge’s 1990 reference from the first spray into the deep drydown.
Common Questions
Is rose a masculine note?
In Egoiste it is. The damask rose is rendered in a deep, slightly jammy register that reads warm and confident rather than romantic and feminine. The cinnamon and rosewood support keep it firmly in masculine territory.
How does it compare to Egoiste Platinum?
Different perfume entirely. Egoiste is a floral oriental built around rose, sandalwood, and spice. Egoiste Platinum is a fresh aromatic fougère built around lavender, rosemary, and woody notes. They share a name but smell completely unrelated.
Best season and occasion?
Autumn and winter, evenings especially. The richness wants cooler weather. It is one of the more confident scents in mainstream masculine perfumery and works particularly well for occasions that justify a bit of presence.
How long does it last?
Eight to twelve hours at our concentration, with the sandalwood leather amber drydown lingering on clothing well into the next day. The 40 percent oil approach extends the wearing considerably beyond the standard eau de toilette format.
