Vanille 44 Paris, inspired by Le Labo Vanille 44 (2008)

Bergamot and mandarin give a brief citrus lift before incense rises through it. The vanilla appears gradually and stays wrapped in resinous smoke and guaiac wood, which has a smoked, faintly rosy dryness. It suggests vanilla more than it imitates it, so there is no custard effect. Musky materials and hedione, a transparent jasmine-like molecule, keep the base airy.

About the original

Alberto Morillas composed Vanille 44, announced in January 2008 as Le Labo's third City Exclusive and sold at first only through Colette in Paris. It remains the Paris City Exclusive: available all year in Paris and offered worldwide during the annual City Exclusives event in August and September. Le Labo describes it as an ambery, incensy, woody vanilla.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Le Labo stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Vanilla wearers who find most vanillas too sweet are the natural audience. The incense and guaiac give it a dry, smoky edge, and the citrus at the start is fleeting. Fans of gourmand vanilla may find it austere.

In the heart, guaiac wood and incense surround the vanilla, smoky and resinous.

The drydown is vanilla with muscenone giving a musky softness and hedione an airy floral lift.

Is Vanille 44 only sold in Paris?

Le Labo sells it all year in Paris and makes it available elsewhere during its annual City Exclusives event in August and September. Our version is inspired by that Paris edition.

Does Vanille 44 smell like a sweet vanilla?

No. Incense, guaiac wood and citrus keep it dry and ambery; Le Labo itself says it suggests vanilla rather than smelling of it.

How does it compare with Tabac 28?

Both are Le Labo City Exclusives, but Tabac 28 (Miami) is a boozy tobacco, while Vanille 44 is an incense-led vanilla.
