Vanille Antique

Vanille Antique, inspired by Byredo Vanille Antique (2022)

Vanille Antique opens with plum and freesia, a fruity, airy start that soon gives way to the vanilla. The bean itself is dark and slightly smoky, and cistus (the rockrose shrub, whose oil smells resinous and faintly leathery) pushes it further in that direction. Amber and cashmere woods fill the middle, so the scent feels dense and rounded rather than syrupy.

About the original

Byredo announced Vanille Antique in April 2022 as an Extrait de Parfum in its Night Veils collection of perfume extracts. The launch text described earthy, dark textures cutting through the sweetness of the vanilla. Byredo has since reissued the Night Veils line in a new format, reportedly with reworked formulas, and Vanille Antique is now sold as a 70 ml Perfume Extract, where older listings show 50 ml. The brand does not name a perfumer.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Byredo stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Cooler months and evenings are where it belongs, going by its positioning. The vanilla is plainly present, so it will not convert a vanilla sceptic, but the smoky, resinous side makes it less obvious than a gourmand.

The Night Veils Perfume Extract (Extrait de Parfum), the only Vanille Antique Byredo makes. Our version is an eau de parfum.

Is it a gourmand vanilla?

Not in the cake-and-sugar sense. Cistus, amber and woods give the vanilla a smoky, resinous character.
