Black Opium Over Red, inspired by Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium Eau de Parfum Over Red (2024)

Over Red keeps Black Opium's coffee and white-floral backbone but paints it red with a cherry accord. Mandarin brightens the first spray. Jasmine and orange blossom form the floral heart, with black tea adding a dry, slightly smoky tannic note. Coffee and vanilla then return in the base with patchouli and woods, giving a sweet, dark finish.

About the original

YSL announced Over Red in December 2023 as a flanker of Black Opium (2014). It launched in travel retail across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India on 27 March 2024 to mark Black Opium's 10th anniversary, with Zoë Kravitz as the face. It was the first time a Jasmine Ourika accord, from YSL's garden in Morocco, was used in Black Opium's floral accord. The perfumer is reported to be Nathalie Lorson.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Yves Saint Laurent stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Cherry is the selling point here, layered over coffee and vanilla in a way that feels sweet and dark at once. It suits those who already enjoy gourmand florals. If cherry accords tend to read medicinal or candied on you, sample before buying.
