Chanel No 5 Eau Premier
39,00 €
Jacques Polge’s lighter, more transparent N°5 reinterpretation. Softer aldehydes, brighter rose and jasmine, creamier sandalwood drydown. Rebuilt at 40 percent perfume oil.
N°5, Translated for the Modern Skin
N°5 Eau Première launched in 2008 (with a refined 2015 relaunch) as Jacques Polge’s lighter, more transparent interpretation of the 1921 original. The brief was an N°5 for a generation that found the parent fragrance too dense. Polge kept the floral aldehyde DNA but reduced the aldehyde intensity, lifted the floral heart, and rebuilt the base around modern musks and a creamier sandalwood. The result reads instantly like N°5 but easier to wear, particularly in daylight and warmer weather. It became one of the most successful N°5 flankers ever, beloved by wearers who admire the original from a distance. Our interpretation follows the modern Eau Première character.
How It Smells
The opening is recognisably N°5 but softer, with aldehydes giving a quieter sparkling lift and ylang ylang and bergamot adding a transparent floral citrus character. Within ten minutes the floral heart appears: jasmine and rose lead, but rendered in a brighter, more dewy register than the original’s warmer interpretation. Neroli and a quiet vanilla shadow weave through the heart, softening the floral intensity. The base is the perfume’s signature divergence from the original. Sandalwood remains the anchor, but rendered creamier and lighter, with vetiver adding earth and modern white musks providing the contemporary drydown texture. The drydown is undeniably N°5 in lineage but cleaner and more transparent in execution.
The Notes
Top: aldehydes, bergamot, neroli, ylang ylang.
Heart: rose, jasmine, lily of the valley.
Base: sandalwood, vetiver, vanilla, white musk, amber.
How Our Version Compares
Eau Première rewards the high concentration approach because the modern N°5 reading depends on the floral heart and creamy sandalwood base lasting through a full wearing. Our European Union production at 40 percent perfume oil concentration extends the floral and woody phases significantly compared to the standard eau de parfum format. The N°5 character is unmistakable; the lighter modern interpretation holds true.
Common Questions
How does it differ from the original N°5?
Lighter, brighter, and more transparent. Eau Première has less aldehyde intensity, a softer floral heart, and a creamier sandalwood base. The original is denser, more powdered, and more obviously vintage in character.
Which should I choose between Eau Première and the original?
The original if you want the full classical N°5 experience and appreciate density. Eau Première if you find the original too heavy or you want an N°5 wearable for daytime and warmer weather.
Is this office appropriate?
Yes, more so than the original. The lighter transparent character makes it well suited to professional environments where the parent fragrance can feel slightly overpowering.
How long does it last?
Seven to ten hours at our concentration, with the sandalwood and white musk drydown lingering as a soft skin scent into the next day. The modern materials extend longevity beyond what lighter N°5 variants typically deliver.
