In Black, inspired by Jesús del Pozo J del Pozo In Black (2006)

In Black is sweeter and lighter than its black bottle suggests. Sour cherry and pink grapefruit start things off with a tart, fruity snap, and rose follows close behind. The heart is a cluster of violet, jasmine, lily and lilac, with peach adding a rounded, fleshy fruit note. Licorice is the unusual touch in the base, giving the vanilla and patchouli an aniseed shading that stops the sweetness from becoming plain.

About the original

Jesús del Pozo launched In Black for women in autumn 2006, first in France as a one-year exclusive with Marionnaud, then in London, Spain and Germany before the US and Asia. It is usually credited to the perfumer Christine Nagel. The brand aimed it at a mature, polished woman in her late thirties. Retailers disagree on whether the original was an eau de toilette or an eau de parfum.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Jesús del Pozo stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Lovers of fruity florals who want something with more shadow than the usual pink bouquet will find it interesting. The cherry and vanilla make it clearly sweet, and the licorice note may not suit anyone who dislikes aniseed.

Was In Black originally an eau de toilette?

Sources disagree: one retailer lists the original In Black as an eau de toilette, another as an eau de parfum. This page assumes the eau de toilette; ours is made as an eau de parfum.

Does it smell of licorice?

Licorice is one of the documented base notes. It gives the vanilla a faint aniseed edge in the drydown.
