Black

Black, inspired by Bvlgari Black (1998)

Black is known for one effect: smoky tea and a rubber-leather accord meant to suggest tyres and tarmac. Green tea and bergamot open it, with a little rose, but the smoke and rubber appear quickly. Sandalwood, cedar and jasmine run through the heart. Then vanilla, amber and musk round off the edges into a powdery, almost sweet base, so the toughness never becomes harsh.

About the original

Annick Menardo composed Black for Bvlgari in 1998 and it was marketed to both men and women. The bottle, a disc wrapped in black rubber, matched the urban idea behind the scent. It is not to be confused with Bvlgari Man in Black (2014), a different fragrance that is still sold. Black itself is no longer listed by Bvlgari, and one fragrance reference marks it as discontinued, although another still lists it as in production.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Bvlgari stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Rubber and smoke divide people, and that is the first thing to know. Wearers who like leather, incense or black tea scents tend to find it addictive. On skin it feels dark but rounded, with the vanilla taking over as it dries.

Is Bvlgari Black the same as Bvlgari Man in Black?

No. Black (1998) is a unisex tea and rubber-leather scent by Annick Menardo. Man in Black (2014) is a separate men's fragrance.

Does it really smell of rubber?

Yes, that accord is deliberate and is the scent's defining feature. The vanilla and amber base softens it over time.

Is Bvlgari Black for men or women?

Both. Bvlgari marketed it as unisex from the start.

Is Bvlgari Black coming back?

So far, we have found no announcement from Bvlgari that it will return. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
