Lacquer here is meant literally: a shiny, slightly synthetic gloss, with a vinyl accord that smells like polished plastic and fresh ink. Makassar ebony, which the brand says suggests leather and birch, gives it a tarry, smoked-wood depth. Dark peony sits underneath as a shadowy floral rather than a pretty one. Olibanum and Atlas cedarwood take over at the end, drier and more incense-like.

About the original

Black Lacquer entered the Private Blend line in mid-2024, in 50 ml and 250 ml sizes. Its glossy black bottle is styled like a chess piece. Fragrance fragrance references credit Guillaume Flavigny with the formula; we have not found the brand confirming it. Despite the shared word, it has no link to Black Orchid, which sits in a different part of the brand's range.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Tom Ford stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Smoky and leathery throughout, it leans dark from the first spray to the drydown. Wearers sometimes pick up pepper, ink and a rum-like facet in the opening. The vinyl and lacquer effect has a synthetic, plastic-like gloss, which can put off those who prefer natural-smelling woods.
