Blu Mediterraneo Ginepro Di Sardegna, inspired by Acqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo Ginepro di Sardegna (2014)

Ginepro di Sardegna begins like the inside of a gin glass: juniper berries, bergamot peel and a dusting of pepper. Allspice and nutmeg add a dry kitchen-spice note that stops it from being purely fresh. As it settles, cypress and sage take it outdoors, towards sun-baked Mediterranean scrub. The cedar base is clean and pencil-like rather than smoky.

About the original

When it was released in 2014, Ginepro di Sardegna was the first new Blu Mediterraneo scent since Bergamotto di Calabria in 2010. It came as an eau de toilette with matching body products. Fragrance databases credit Mélanie Carestia as its perfumer. It is no longer listed on the brand's Blu Mediterraneo pages, where Mirto di Panarea and Fico di Amalfi still appear, and at least one large retailer has removed its listing.

Our version

When we make it, ours will be an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It will not be Acqua di Parma stock, an official relaunch or the original formula.

Who it suits

Men will probably find it easier to wear than women, although the brand presented it as unisex. It makes most sense in hot weather, worn the way you might wear a cologne. The juniper and pepper opening is brisk and bitter, so a buyer hoping for citrus sweetness should look elsewhere.

Juniper leads with a gin-and-pine crispness, supported by bergamot and pepper, while allspice and nutmeg add dry spice.

Cypress and sage form the heart, green and resinous with an aromatic, herb-garden edge.

It dries down to Virginia cedar, clean and woody.

Has Acqua di Parma discontinued Ginepro di Sardegna?

It no longer appears on Acqua di Parma's Blu Mediterraneo pages and is reported as discontinued. The brand has not published a statement that we could find.

Is it a men's or women's fragrance?

It was sold as unisex. Many wearers find that its juniper and cedar structure leans masculine.
