Ocean View, inspired by Karl Lagerfeld Ocean View for Women (2016)

Lychee sets the tone here: watery, slightly rosy fruit with pineapple and ripe peach close behind. Despite the seaside name, the composition reads as fruit and flowers rather than salt or marine notes. Jasmine, rose and magnolia take over once the fruit thins out, keeping things airy instead of heady. A base of vanilla, musk and sandalwood rounds it off with a smooth, lightly sweet skin scent.

About the original

Karl Lagerfeld released Ocean View in March 2016 as a limited-edition duo: an eau de parfum for women and an eau de toilette for men. Both were presented as summery variations on the Karl Lagerfeld for Women and for Men fragrances of 2014. The women's version is credited to Serge Majoullier and Cécile Matton, while the men's had a different perfumer and different notes. As a limited edition, it is no longer made.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Karl Lagerfeld stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Fans of fruity florals with a holiday mood will get on with it best, particularly in summer, which is how the brand positioned it. The fruit is prominent in the first stage, so buyers who want a dry, green or woody perfume may find it too sweet.

The top is fruit-led: lychee gives a juicy, faintly floral sweetness, pineapple adds tang and peach a rounder, velvety note.

Jasmine and rose form the centre, with magnolia lending a light, lemony-floral lift that stops the bouquet from feeling dense.

Vanilla, musk and sandalwood make up the drydown, a clean and gently sweet finish rather than a heavy amber one.

Is this the women's or the men's Ocean View?

This is the women's Ocean View, originally an eau de parfum from 2016. Ocean View for Men was an eau de toilette with a different composition.

Is Ocean View the same as Karl Lagerfeld for Women?

No. Ocean View was a limited summer variation on the 2014 Karl Lagerfeld for Women, built around lychee, pineapple and peach.

Does it smell marine?

Not really. Despite the name, its documented notes are fruits, white and pink flowers, vanilla, musk and sandalwood, with no sea notes listed.

Is Karl Lagerfeld Ocean View coming back?

It was a limited edition. So far, we have found no announcement from Karl Lagerfeld about a re-release. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
