A Discontinued Cartier Masculine, Recreated
Roadster, released by Cartier in 2008 and composed by house perfumer Mathilde Laurent, was meant to capture the spirit of an open road sports car. Mint cologne opens the bottle, bergamot and orange follow, and a warm drydown of vanilla, patchouli, and cashmere wood brings the composition home. It earned a passionate following among Cartier collectors for its unusual freshness over warmth structure, the cologne style top sitting against a gourmand and woody base. Cartier discontinued the fragrance some years ago and the Roadster name now refers only to the watch collection. Original bottles are increasingly rare and increasingly expensive on the secondary market.
How It Smells
The opening is bracingly fresh, cool mint together with bergamot and a soft orange peel character that smells immediately summer. Within ten minutes the composition begins to warm, labdanum and vanilla quietly entering, and the cashmere wood gives the heart a soft suede texture that is quite unlike the standard cologne family. By the drydown the structure has flipped: the warm vanilla patchouli accord dominates, with the mint and bergamot returning only as a faint cool memory. The combination of an icy opening and a comforting close is what made Roadster memorable, and what our interpretation captures.
The Notes
Top: mint, bergamot, mandarin, orange.
Heart: labdanum, cashmere wood.
Base: vanilla, patchouli.
How Our Version Compares
Because Roadster has been out of production for some time, sourcing it has become a hunt for collectors. Reformulated stock from after the IFRA changes also reads differently from the early formula many people remember. Our European Union production at 40 percent perfume oil is built around the character of the 2008 release, the version that defined the perfume’s reputation. The high concentration approach extends the mint and bergamot opening, which is the phase most vulnerable to thinness in lighter compositions.
Common Questions
Is this really discontinued?
Yes, Cartier no longer produces Roadster as a fragrance. The Roadster name now refers exclusively to the watch line that returned to production. Existing bottles trade on the secondary market at increasingly high prices.
Will I recognise it if I have worn the original?
The character holds. The mint and bergamot opening, the cashmere wood transition, and the warm vanilla patchouli drydown are all present and recognisable.
Is this suitable for warm weather?
The freshness of the opening makes it summer ready, while the warm base keeps it interesting in autumn evenings. It is one of the more genuinely versatile masculines we offer.
Was it considered a niche or mainstream release?
Mainstream by Cartier’s standards but quirky in its construction. The mint cologne to vanilla amber arc is unusual enough that it never had a direct mass market hit, which is partly why it was eventually retired.
