A 1980s masculine chypre that opens on lemon and basil, turns spicy with carnation and patchouli, and dries down to leather and oakmoss. Men who like structured, old-school fragrances with a bitter green edge are its natural wearers.

Inspired by Versace L’Homme (1984), which no longer appears in Versace’s current men’s fragrance range.

About the perfume

Versace L'Homme, inspired by Versace Versace L'Homme (1984)

L'Homme starts with brisk citrus and herbs, lemon and bergamot sharpened by basil. Carnation and cinnamon then bring a clove-like spice to the heart, deepened by patchouli and sandalwood. Leather and oakmoss form the base, made richer by labdanum and smoothed by tonka and vanilla. The overall effect is layered and slightly bitter, typical of men's chypres of its decade.

About the original

One of Gianni Versace's early men's fragrances, L'Homme was released in 1984 and composed by Roger Pellegrino. It is a woody chypre, a family built on the contrast between a citrus top and a base of oakmoss and patchouli. It is unrelated to Versace Pour Homme from 2008 and to the Dylan Blue line. It no longer appears on Versace's official men's fragrance page, though one perfume database still lists it as in production, so its status is not fully clear.

Wear this while you wait

  • Antaeus: Chanel Antaeus, a 1980s leathery masculine
  • Bel Ami: Hermès Bel Ami, a leather chypre for men

Our version

When we make it, ours will be an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It will not be Versace stock, an official relaunch or the original formula.

Who it suits

Men who grew up with 1980s classics, or who like leather and moss in their fragrance, are the likely audience. It has presence and a formal, tailored feel. The citrus-basil opening is bracing and divisive, so it can come as a shock after modern fresh scents.

Notes

Notes of the original fragrance, as listed in fragrance references.

Top notes: Lemon, Basil, Bergamot, Petitgrain, Green Notes

Heart notes: Carnation, Cinnamon, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Rose, Cedar, Jasmine

Base notes: Leather, Oakmoss, Musk, Vanilla, Labdanum, Amber, Tonka Bean

How it smells

Lemon, basil and bergamot open it with a bitter, herbal brightness, while petitgrain and green notes add a leafy edge.

Carnation and cinnamon give the heart its spice, with rose and jasmine adding a floral layer over patchouli and woods.

Leather and oakmoss dominate the base, with labdanum and amber for depth and tonka bean and vanilla for a smoother finish.
