Jacques Polge composed Antaeus in 1981, naming it after the Greek giant of legend who drew his strength from contact with the earth. The composition lived up to the metaphor: a heavily leathered, aromatic masculine fougère rooted in lavender, sage, and labdanum, with the kind of animalic depth that defined the great 1980s men’s launches. Antaeus has remained in continuous production for over four decades and continues to attract a loyal following among collectors who appreciate classical masculine perfumery executed at the highest level. How Our Version Compares to the Original

Antaeus is exactly the kind of dense classical masculine that benefits most from concentration. The leather and oakmoss notes carry the perfume’s identity, and they reward the time and oil load needed to develop properly. Our European Union production at 40 percent perfume oil keeps the leather audible from the opening into the deep drydown, with the labdanum animalic finish lingering as long as the wearer wants it to.

How it Smells

The opening is herbal and slightly green, lemon and lime giving citrus brightness with sage, basil, and coriander providing the aromatic complexity that distinguishes Antaeus from simpler citrus aromatics. Within minutes the leather note appears, which is the perfume’s true centre. Not a polished saddle leather, but a softer, slightly powdered, slightly smoky leather accord that reads luxurious rather than aggressive. Myrrh and patchouli add resinous depth through the heart, with thyme and oakmoss building the classical fougère structure. The drydown is rich, dark, and refined: castoreum and labdanum animalic notes, sandalwood, and a faint hint of leather still present hours later.

Is this style still wearable today, or is it dated?
It is classical rather than dated. If you appreciate the 1980s masculine fougère tradition (Drakkar Noir, Kouros, Lapidus Pour Homme), Antaeus is the most refined of the lot. If you only enjoy modern aquatic and gourmand styles, it may read traditional.

How strong is the leather note?
Moderately strong, but polished. It is the defining note of the composition but it is not animalic in the way some 1980s leathers were. The Chanel polish keeps it refined.

Best occasions and season?
Autumn and winter, evenings especially. The richness wants cooler weather and lower light. Office wear is possible with restraint, but Antaeus is more naturally suited to occasions that justify a bit of presence.
