Carved Oud

Carved Oud, inspired by Thameen Carved Oud (2013)

Cardamom opens it with a cool, green spice, and cypriol (an Indian grass root with a smoky, earthy smell) roughens the edges straight away. Cypress adds a resinous, coniferous lift. Oud sits at the centre with cedar and patchouli, so the heart reads as polished wood with a dark streak. Amber and labdanum gradually round it into something resinous, while vetiver keeps the base dry.

About the original

Thameen is an independent London perfume house known for jewel-themed collections. The brand says Carved Oud draws on the ancient Indian ritual of adorning a woman with perfumes and jewels in sixteen stages, and on the goddesses carved into Indian temples. Fragrance fragrance references give 2013 as its launch year. The house currently labels it extrait de parfum, though some retailers still label it eau de parfum. The line has since grown to include Red Carved Oud, a separate extrait, as well as a hair fragrance and body lotion.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Thameen stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

It suits oud lovers who want wood and spice rather than sweetness. Retailers position it for evenings, formal occasions and cooler months. The dark oud and earthy cypriol can feel austere to newcomers.

This page is the original Carved Oud. Red Carved Oud is a later, separate extrait in the same Thameen line.

Is Carved Oud sweet?

Not really. The official pyramid has no vanilla or sugary notes; amber and labdanum add depth, but the character stays woody and spicy.

What is cypriol?

The root of an Indian grass, sometimes called nagarmotha. It smells earthy, woody and faintly smoky, and often appears alongside oud.
