Journey Man, inspired by Amouage Journey Man (2014)

The opening tingles rather than refreshes: Sichuan pepper gives a numbing, almost electric spice, and cardamom adds a cool aromatic warmth over bergamot, neroli and bitter orange. Within minutes juniper berries and incense pull it in a darker direction, and tobacco leaf adds a dry brownness. The base of cypriol, an earthy wood with a smoky facet, sits under leather and tonka, so the finish is woody with only a gentle sweetness.

About the original

Amouage announced Journey Man in May 2014 as one half of a pair with Journey Woman. The Omani house classes it as woody-spicy and sells it as an eau de parfum without naming a perfumer. It remains in the brand's current US and EU ranges, whatever some blog posts have claimed.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Amouage stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Men drawn to incense and tobacco, but not to the heavy vanilla of many tobacco scents, are its natural audience. Its peppery start can feel prickly at first, and the smoky, leathery base will not please a wearer after something clean and airy.

Sichuan pepper and cardamom lead, backed by bergamot, neroli and bigarade (bitter orange), so the first minutes are spicy with a citrus lift.

Juniper berries bring a gin-like crispness to the heart, while incense, geraniol (a rosy, geranium-like note) and tobacco leaves give it a drier, smokier body.

Leather, cypriol and ambroxan make up the base, softened by tonka bean.

Is Amouage Journey Man discontinued?

No. Amouage still lists it in its US and EU stores, although online stock is sometimes sold out.

Is this Journey Man or Journey Woman?

This is Journey Man, the spicy woody one with tobacco and leather. The two were launched together in 2014 but are separate fragrances.
