Tobacolor

Tobacolor, inspired by Dior Tobacolor (2021)

Dior took its cue from hookah smoke drifting through a bazaar, and the opening is exactly that kind of sweet, fruity tobacco. Honey coats the leaf, while peach and plum give it a stewed-fruit roundness. Over time the syrup recedes and the scent becomes drier and smokier, settling on amber. Dior calls it a hot-cold blend, and that shift from sticky to dry is its most interesting feature.

About the original

Tobacolor was released in La Collection Privée Christian Dior in 2021 and is generally attributed to François Demachy. Dior describes it as an ambery gourmand tobacco moving between fruity and honeyed notes, and publishes no formal note list. The launch year and perfumer come from reviews and fragrance references rather than Dior press material.

Our version

Who it suits

The start is sweet and fruity: honey, cooked peach and plum over tobacco leaf.

As the fruit fades, tobacco moves forward with a smoky edge, joined in some descriptions by a little citrus.

The base is amber and dry tobacco, far less sweet than the opening, with smoke lingering.

Does Tobacolor smell like cigarettes?

No. It is a sweet, honeyed tobacco leaf with fruit and amber, closer to the hookah smoke Dior had in mind than to ash.

Is Tobacolor very sweet?

At first, yes: honey, peach and plum sit over the tobacco. It then dries to a smokier, more ambery tobacco, though the opening may be too sweet for people who avoid gourmands.
