Olivier Polge’s 2005 iris-cocoa-leather Dior masculine icon. Bergamot and lavender into Iris pallida, cocoa and cardamom, on a polished leather and vetiver base. Rebuilt at 40 percent oil.
The 2005 Iris Revolution
Olivier Polge composed the original Dior Homme in 2005, and the result rewrote modern masculine perfumery. The novelty was placing iris (orris root) at the centre of a men’s composition, paired with cocoa, lavender, sage and leather. The perfume became one of the most influential men’s launches of the 21st century. The composition has been reformulated multiple times since, most recently in 2020 under Francois Demachy, but the 2005 Polge reference (cocoa-iris-leather) is the version most wearers describe as iconic Dior Homme. Our interpretation respects that original profile.
How It Smells
The opening is bright and slightly herbal, bergamot leading with lavender adding aromatic lift and sage contributing a quiet green herbal character. Within fifteen minutes the heart settles into its iconic centre: Iris pallida (orris root) takes a dominant lead, rendered with the cool grey violet powdered quality that makes iris one of the most distinctive notes in perfumery, with a soft cocoa accord adding the trademark warm chocolate-iris pairing that defines the composition. Cardamom and ambrette seeds add subtle spice depth through the heart. The base is where Dior Homme reveals its leather lineage. Leather provides a polished suede texture, vetiver adds earthy structure, patchouli grounds the composition with earthy depth, and a quiet cashmere wood smooths the drydown. The overall impression is sophisticated and slightly retro in the best masculine perfumery tradition, polished without trying hard.
The Notes
Top: bergamot, lavender, sage.
Heart: Iris pallida, cocoa, cardamom, ambrette seeds.
Base: leather, vetiver, patchouli, cashmere wood.
How Our Version Compares
The iris cocoa leather signature of Dior Homme depends on quality iris materials and a properly weighted leather note, both of which can collapse in lower oil formulations. Our European Union production at 40 percent perfume oil concentration uses iris accords and leather materials calibrated for that balance. The bergamot lavender opening sparkles cleanly, the iris cocoa heart carries the perfume’s character through the wearing, and the leather vetiver patchouli drydown lasts well into the next day on clothing.
Common Questions
How does it compare to the 2020 Dior Homme reformulation?
Significantly different. The 2005 Polge original (our reference) is iris-cocoa-leather forward. The 2020 Demachy reformulation pulled the composition into brighter, more bergamot-cedar territory with vetiver. If you loved the original Dior Homme, the 2020 version may feel like a different perfume.
Is iris really a masculine note?
It is now, largely because Dior Homme proved it could be. Before 2005, iris was considered too floral and powdery for men’s perfumery. Polge’s framing with cocoa and leather opened the category, and iris has since become a major masculine note (Prada Luna Rossa Carbon, Tom Ford Italian Cypress, Hermès Iris Ukiyoe, and many others).
Does it really smell of chocolate?
Subtly. The cocoa note is more of a textural warmth than an overt chocolate fragrance. It pairs with the iris in a way that smells expensive and slightly mysterious rather than gourmand sweet. Most wearers find the chocolate impression appears only intermittently rather than dominating.
Best occasion and season?
Autumn and winter especially, when the iris cocoa leather base reads at its best. Evening occasions suit the composition particularly well, but it works in professional daytime settings too. Year round wear is possible; cooler weather flatters it most.
How does it project?
Moderate. This is a confident close-range scent rather than a loud projector. People will smell you when they’re near, with the iris and leather signature drawing compliments at conversation distance. The 40 percent oil concentration extends the drydown considerably on clothing.
