Casmir, inspired by Chopard Cašmir (1991)

Tropical fruit arrives first, a ripe mixture of mango, peach, apricot and raspberry with coconut running through it. A heart of carnation and cinnamon adds a spiced, clove-like warmth that keeps the fruit from going flat. The base is where Cašmir lives: vanilla, benzoin and tonka, with opoponax, a balsamic resin related to myrrh, giving it a dark, honeyed depth. Now Smell This described the whole effect as intensely sweet and heavy.

About the original

Michel Almairac composed Cašmir for Chopard, launched in 1991 according to Now Smell This (some fragrance references give 1992). It was first produced under Lancaster and later under Coty. Wearers widely report reformulation and describe current bottles as lighter and fruitier than the 1990s version. Chopard does not sell it on its own website, but it remains listed by several European retailers, so we have not been able to confirm whether it is still produced.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Chopard stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Winter evenings and cold weather suit it best. It is a heavy, enveloping fragrance with a lot of sugar and vanilla, so it rewards a light hand. Coconut is noticeable in the opening, so it is a poor match for a coconut sceptic.

Mango, peach, apricot, raspberry and blackcurrant open with coconut and bergamot, juicy and tropical.

In the heart, carnation and cinnamon bring spice, with jasmine, geranium, mandarin and lily-of-the-valley softening it.

The drydown is vanilla, benzoin, tonka bean and opoponax over amber, musk, patchouli and sandalwood, thick and balsamic.

Is Chopard Cašmir discontinued?

We have not been able to confirm whether Chopard still produces it. It is not on Chopard's own site but several European retailers still list it.

Does Cašmir smell of coconut?

Yes, coconut is part of the fruity opening and adds to the creamy, tropical feel before the vanilla takes over.

Which version is the older formula?

The 1990s Lancaster-era Cašmir is generally described as heavier and less fruity than later bottles.
