L'Eau De Chloe

L'Eau De Chloe, inspired by Chloé L'Eau de Chloé (2012)

It starts sour and fizzy: citron, grapefruit and bergamot lifted by aldehydes, which are synthetic notes with a sparkling, freshly laundered effect. Rose water then takes over, paler and wetter than a full rose, with violet, peony and lily-of-the-valley around it. Underneath sits a chypre base, meaning a mossy, dry structure built on oakmoss and patchouli. Here it is kept light, so the overall effect is clean rather than earthy.

About the original

Michel Almairac composed L'Eau de Chloé in 2012 as a lighter eau de toilette flanker of Chloé Eau de Parfum (2008). Now Smell This noted that it swaps the parent's rose for rosewater and pairs it with a patchouli base. Chloé L'Eau (2019) is a different composition, and Chloé L'Eau de Parfum Intense is another separate scent that Chloé still sells. Fragrance references and forum reports from 2019 record it as discontinued, and Chloé's current range no longer includes it.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Chloé stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Spring and summer are its natural seasons. It has the tidy, freshly washed feel of soap and citrus, which suits the warmer months. The patchouli gives it a drier edge than the parent scent, so a fan of sweet, richly floral roses may find the drydown plain.

Heart: rose and rose water lead, with violet, peony, lily-of-the-valley, freesia, magnolia and jasmine giving a watery, clean bouquet.

Base: patchouli, oakmoss and cedar with white musk, amber and labdanum. It stays dry and fairly sheer.

Is L'Eau de Chloé discontinued?

It is no longer listed in Chloé's range and was reported as discontinued around 2018 to 2019. Chloé has not given an official date.

Does it smell like soap?

Many wearers describe it as clean and slightly soapy, mainly from the aldehydes and rose water.

Is L'Eau De Chloe coming back?

So far, we have found no announcement from Chloé that it will return. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
