Barenia, inspired by Hermès Barénia (2024)

Barénia follows the classic chypre plan, where a floral and fruity top rests on a dry, earthy base. Here the flower is butterfly lily, a white bloom from the ginger family, and the fruit is miracle berry. Oak wood and an intense patchouli supply the frame. Hermès describes the result as a balance of strength and softness, and that tension runs all through it.

About the original

Christine Nagel, Hermès's house perfumer, created Barénia, launched in September 2024 as the house's first chypre. The name refers to Barénia, one of Hermès's heritage leathers. Its refillable bottle, designed by Philippe Mouquet, takes its cue from the Collier de Chien bracelet. An Eau de Parfum Intense with a richer composition followed in August 2025; this page is based on the 2024 eau de parfum.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Hermès stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Chypre lovers who want a recent example, not a vintage one, have a clear option here. Hermès frames it as warm and sensual, and patchouli is prominent, so it comes across earthy rather than fresh. Fans of sheer florals may find the woody base heavier than they expect.

The opening pairs butterfly lily with miracle berry, a floral start with a faint fruity roundness.

Beneath them, oak wood gives a dry, slightly tannic frame as the patchouli begins to build.

Patchouli dominates the drydown, earthy and dense, held within the chypre structure Hermès built the scent around.

Is this Barénia or Barénia Eau de Parfum Intense?

It is based on the original Barénia Eau de Parfum from 2024. The Intense of 2025 is a separate, richer flanker.

Does Barénia smell of leather?

Not according to its official notes. The name refers to Hermès's Barénia leather, but the listed notes are butterfly lily, miracle berry, oak wood and patchouli.
