Must De Cartier Gold, inspired by Cartier Must de Cartier Gold (2015)

Galbanum and green notes give the opening a bitter, stemmy bite, and it is the part that divides opinion. Once that settles, jasmine and osmanthus take over; osmanthus is a Chinese blossom that smells of apricot with a faintly suede-like edge. Vanilla then smooths everything, so the scent moves from green bitterness to a rounder floral finish.

About the original

Cartier's in-house perfumer Mathilde Laurent created Must de Cartier Gold as a flanker of the 1981 original, and it went on pre-order in July 2015. Its gold oval bottle, ridged with gadroons, refers to Must de Cartier lighters and came in a red case. One commenter at launch saw it as an eau de parfum reworking of Must more than an entirely new scent. It no longer appears in Cartier's current Must offer, which centres on the parfum, the eau de toilette and refills.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Cartier stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Admirers of the original Must who want its green-vanilla idea with jasmine and osmanthus in front make the obvious match. Expect real bitterness at the start; that galbanum opening is the main reason it splits people.

Is Must de Cartier Gold discontinued?

It no longer appears in Cartier's fragrance offer, and we have found it mainly with independent sellers. We have found no official end date.

How does Gold differ from the original Must de Cartier?

Gold (2015) is an eau de parfum built on galbanum, jasmine, osmanthus and vanilla, closer to a green floral. The 1981 Must is a powdery oriental with a fuller base. We make both.

Is it the same as the red-bottled Must de Cartier eau de parfum?

No. Gold comes in a gold oval bottle and is a separate flanker.

Is Must De Cartier Gold coming back?

So far, we have found no announcement from Cartier that it will return. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
