Fahrenheit, inspired by Dior Fahrenheit (1988)

Fahrenheit is built on violet leaf, which smells green, cool and slightly cucumber-like rather than floral, set against leather and woods. In the first stretch many people pick up a metallic, petrol or burnt-rubber facet; one perfume guide describes the original as leather 'as if soaked in gasoline'. Mandarin and nutmeg flower lift the top. Once that opening calms, the scent settles into leather, vetiver and a faint tonka sweetness.

About the original

Dior released Fahrenheit in 1988. Jean-Louis Sieuzac is the perfumer most often credited, with some sources adding Michel Almairac. It has been credited with an accord of violet leaf, wood and leather that was new at the time, and the bottle carries a red-to-yellow gradient. The original Eau de Toilette is still in Dior's range, while Fahrenheit 32 and the other flankers are separate fragrances.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Dior stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Polarising is the honest word: people tend to love the petrol-and-leather opening or dislike it on first sniff. Once it settles it is quieter and more wearable than that first impression suggests. Anyone expecting a conventional fresh scent should sample the opening first.

The start is green and metallic: violet leaf, mandarin and nutmeg flower, with a vapour-like note that many compare to petrol.

In the heart violet leaf stays prominent, joined by cedar and sandalwood and a light floral layer of carnation and honeysuckle.

Leather and vetiver form the base, warmed by amber and a little tonka bean.

What does the petrol note in Fahrenheit smell like?

It is not a listed note but an impression many wearers describe in the opening: metallic and slightly oily, sometimes compared to burnt rubber. It calms down as the leather and woods come through.

Is this Fahrenheit or Fahrenheit 32?

This is the original 1988 Fahrenheit. Fahrenheit 32 (2007) is a different flanker, which we also make.
