Noir Anthracite, inspired by Tom Ford Noir Anthracite (2017)

Anthracite is a hard, glossy coal, and the name fits: this scent smells charred and mineral more than sweet. Sichuan pepper gives the opening a tingling, almost numbing spice, with bergamot and ginger alongside. Tuberose and jasmine sambac are there, but buried under galbanum and dry woods. Cedar, macassar and sandalwood finish it with an ashy, smoked-timber feel.

About the original

Noir Anthracite joined Tom Ford's Noir range in the Signature collection in autumn 2017, reaching travel retail from September in a gunmetal ribbed bottle. Its campaign, fronted by Jon Kortajarena and Yasmin Wijnaldum, was built around the brand's 'Noir man'. It is a different scent from Noir (2012), Noir Extreme and Noir de Noir, all of which Tom Ford still sells. Anthracite itself is absent from the brand's current US and UK ranges, and owners have widely reported it as discontinued.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Tom Ford stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Cold weather and evening wear are where enthusiasts tend to place it, and Tom Ford marketed it to men. With no sweetness to cushion the smoky woods, it can feel austere next to amber-heavy evening scents.

Top notes: Bergamot, Sichuan Pepper, Ginger

Base notes: Patchouli, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Macassar Wood

Bergamot and ginger open briskly, but the Sichuan pepper is what stands out, prickly and faintly citrusy.

In the heart, galbanum adds a bitter green edge to tuberose and jasmine sambac, so the florals read as texture rather than bouquet.

Cedarwood and macassar wood dominate the base, joined by sandalwood and patchouli; the effect is dry and smoky, often likened to ash or charcoal.

Is Noir Anthracite discontinued?

It has vanished from the brand's American and British websites, and owners report it as discontinued, though we have seen no brand statement. Noir, Noir Extreme and Noir de Noir are still sold.

Is Noir Anthracite a men's or unisex fragrance?

Tom Ford launched it as part of the men's Noir range and marketed it to men.

Is it the same as Tom Ford Noir?

No. Noir is the 2012 original of the range and is still sold; Anthracite is a separate 2017 scent built on Sichuan pepper and smoky woods. We make Noir as its own product.

Is Tom Ford Noir Anthracite coming back?

So far, we have found no announcement from Tom Ford that it will return. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
