Happy, inspired by Clinique Happy for Men (1999)

Happy for Men leads with lime peel and mandarin, a citrus pairing that reads tart first and only faintly sugary. Behind it sits a sea-breeze accord, the airy, slightly salty effect perfumers use to suggest open water, plus a layer of green notes. The woods arrive late and stay light: cedarwood and cypress give a pencil-shaving dryness instead of a heavy base. Clinique's own summary, 'Cool. Crisp. A hint of citrus.', describes the whole arc fairly.

About the original

Clinique launched Happy for Men in 1999, two years after the women's Happy. The company has not officially credited a perfumer. It remains in the Clinique range in 2026; the US site calls it Happy For Men Cologne Spray, while European retailers usually list it as an eau de toilette. The current version is reported to have been reformulated.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Clinique stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Lime-led and light, it belongs to warm weather and daytime wear. Nothing in it is smoky or powdery, and the citrus never turns candied. Men hoping for depth or a resinous base will find the structure thin, since the woods are only a frame for the citrus and sea air.

This page is the men's Happy for Men from 1999. The women's Clinique Happy (1997) is a separate scent, which we also make.

Clinique sells it as a Cologne Spray in the US, while EU retailers list it as an eau de toilette. Our version is made as an eau de parfum.

Does it smell of the sea?

Partly. The sea-breeze accord gives an airy, watery impression in the heart, but lime and mandarin are what you notice first.
