The Olivier Polge Aromatic Masculine, 2014

Intenso launched in 2014, composed by Olivier Polge (Chanel’s current in-house perfumer) as D&G’s confident aromatic masculine. The brief was a layered woody composition built around lavender, marigold, basil and geranium at the opening, cypress and absinthe at the heart, and a base of amber, tobacco, sandalwood and musk. Where typical mid-2010s masculines went either aquatic-fresh or sweet-amber, Intenso pulled into aromatic woody territory with a confident sensual character. The composition has remained one of D&G’s distinctive masculine offerings. Our interpretation respects the aromatic character.

How It Smells

The opening is bright and aromatic, lavender leading with its trademark herbal polished character, marigold adding a quiet warm aromatic floral nuance (an unusual note in masculine perfumery), basil contributing herbal green depth, and geranium providing a green floral support that ties the opening to the heart. Within fifteen minutes the heart settles into the perfume’s signature accord: cypress takes a leading mineral wood role, absinthe adds a quiet aromatic-herbal depth (rendered as polished rather than overtly herbal), and a soft aromatic continues threading through the middle. The base is where Intenso reveals its sensual character. Amber wraps the composition in luminous warm depth, tobacco adds sweet cured leaf warmth, sandalwood provides creamy wood structure, musk smooths the drydown, and a quiet woody character grounds the finish.
