Pierre Wargnye’s 1994 classical D&G aromatic fougere masculine. Bergamot, neroli and sage into lavender and pepper, on a tobacco, tonka bean and cedar base. Rebuilt at 40 percent oil.
The 1994 Classical Masculine Icon
Pour Homme launched in 1994, composed by Pierre Wargnye for Dolce & Gabbana as the brand’s iconic classical masculine. The brief was a polished aromatic fougere built around bergamot, citrus, neroli and sage at the opening, lavender and pepper at the heart, and a base of tobacco, tonka bean, cedar and woody notes. Where typical mid-1990s masculines went either powerhouse aquatic (Cool Water) or sweet oriental, Pour Homme pulled into classical aromatic fougere territory with confident Italian luxury polish throughout. The composition has remained in continuous production for over three decades and continues to attract wearers across generations. Our interpretation respects the classical character.
How It Smells
The opening is bright and aromatic, bergamot leading with its sparkling citrus character, citrus notes contributing additional brightness, neroli adding honeyed white floral citrus support, and sage providing a quiet aromatic herbal nuance. Within fifteen minutes the heart settles into the perfume’s signature accord: lavender takes a leading aromatic role with its trademark herbal polished character, pepper adds a quick warm spicy bite, and a soft aromatic continues threading through the middle. The base is where Pour Homme earns its classical reputation. Tobacco provides warm sweet cured leaf depth, tonka bean adds soft hay-like coumarin sweetness, cedar contributes clean wood structure, and a quiet woody character grounds the drydown into a polished masculine signature. The overall impression is classical aromatic fougere luxury, confident and grown up in the great Italian masculine perfumery tradition.
The Notes
Top: bergamot, citrus, neroli, sage.
Heart: lavender, pepper.
Base: tobacco, tonka bean, cedar, woody notes.
How Our Version Compares
Classical aromatic fougere masculines like Pour Homme reward concentration because the tobacco-tonka-cedar drydown needs density to develop fully. Our European Union production at 40 percent perfume oil concentration handles the composition well, with the bergamot citrus neroli opening sparkling cleanly, the lavender pepper heart holding through the wearing, and the tobacco tonka cedar drydown lasting well into the next day on clothing.
Common Questions
Will it feel dated?
Classical rather than dated. The polished aromatic fougere character has aged into timelessness rather than nostalgia. Many young wearers adopt Pour Homme precisely because it sits outside current aquatic and gourmand trends with a confident grown up character.
How does it compare to other classical masculines?
More tobacco-tonka than typical 1990s fougeres. Less aromatic-herbal than Drakkar Noir, less powerhouse than Joop! Pour Homme. D&G Pour Homme occupies the polished Italian aromatic fougere territory with confident tobacco depth.
Best season?
Autumn and winter especially, when the tobacco tonka cedar drydown reads at its best. Year round wear is fine; cooler weather suits the warm base most naturally.
How long does it last?
Eight to ten hours at our concentration, with the tobacco tonka cedar drydown lingering on clothing into the next day. The 40 percent oil approach extends the wearing significantly.
