Presence, inspired by Montblanc Presence (2001)

Spice sets the tone from the first spray: cinnamon in front, with cardamom and ginger adding heat and a little zest over bergamot. Apple softens it into something rounder, and heliotrope, a flower that smells of almond and vanilla-tinged powder, gives the heart its gentle, cushioned feel. Sage keeps a herbal thread running through. The base of amber, sandalwood, teak wood, tonka and white musk is smooth and mellow.

About the original

Presence dates from 2001, among the first fragrances Montblanc released, and databases credit Corinne Cachen as the perfumer. It is the men's fragrance, distinct from the women's Presence d'une Femme and from the flanker Presence Cool. Retailers classify it as an oriental-spicy scent.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Montblanc stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Cinnamon lovers are its natural audience, and the apple and heliotrope make it feel comforting rather than fiery. Its powdery heart may seem old-fashioned to someone used to modern fresh aquatics.

We have not been able to confirm whether Montblanc still produces it.

Is it very spicy?

Cinnamon is clear in the opening, but apple, heliotrope and tonka soften it, so it feels spiced rather than hot.
