Sauvage Elixir arrived in 2021 as Francois Demachy’s most concentrated expression of the Sauvage line, designed to deliver the perfume’s character in a denser more complex register. The brief took the Sauvage idea deeper into spicy and resinous territory: grapefruit, cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom at the opening, lavender and licorice at the heart, and a rich base of sandalwood, amber, vetiver and patchouli. Where the standard Sauvage reads bright and modern, Sauvage Elixir reads warm and confidently grown up, designed for cooler weather and evening occasions where the standard EDT might feel too light. The composition has remained in active production and represents the most opulent version of the Sauvage line. Our interpretation respects the denser character.

How It Smells

The opening is unusually warm for a Sauvage, grapefruit leading with cinnamon adding warm spice, nutmeg contributing additional spicy depth, and cardamom threading through with aromatic polish. Within fifteen minutes the heart settles: lavender takes a leading role with aromatic polish (rendered denser and more concentrated than in the standard Sauvage), licorice adds an unusual slightly anise-edged sweetness that distinguishes Elixir from every other Sauvage variant, and the spice notes continue threading through the heart. The base is where Sauvage Elixir reveals its concentrated character. Sandalwood provides creamy wood depth, amber wraps the composition in luminous warmth, vetiver and patchouli ground the drydown with earthy support, and a quiet woody character continues through the deepest hours. The overall impression is warm spicy masculine luxury, distinctly different from the standard Sauvage despite sharing the name and bottle.

Yes, distinctly. The licorice is one of the most recognisable features of Sauvage Elixir, threading through the heart with its slightly anise-edged sweetness. It is what distinguishes Elixir from the standard Sauvage and gives the composition its signature character.

Autumn and winter especially, when the warm spicy character reads at its best. Evening occasions suit the composition particularly well. The dense character can feel slightly heavy in warm weather; the standard Sauvage suits summer better.

How long does it last?
