Jean Claude Ellena spent the 1990s building the reputation that would later make him in house perfumer at Hermès. Declaration, composed for Cartier in 1998, is the clearest preview of the style he would refine for the rest of his career: spare, transparent, an idea reduced to its essentials. Cedar and cardamom around a heart of bitter orange, with the dry warmth of birch and a quiet leather drift through the base. It became one of the most influential men’s fragrances of the late twentieth century, and it has stayed on Cartier’s shelves ever since. Our interpretation respects the original’s restraint.

How It Smells

The opening is bright and slightly bitter, a sparkle of bitter orange and bergamot threaded with a green cardamom spice that immediately reads upscale. Within minutes ginger and pepper add a faint warmth, and the cedar begins to assert itself: not the perfumed pencil shavings of cheap masculines, but a fine grain woody character that smells of luxury. As the heart settles, a quiet leather note emerges, soft rather than aggressive, with caraway and a thread of dry birch giving the composition its signature texture. The drydown is woody, slightly smoky, and remarkably refined for something this widely available.
