Declaration, inspired by Cartier Déclaration (1998)

Déclaration is built on contrast. The opening pairs bitter orange with herbal artemisia, an herb related to wormwood, and a dose of cumin that some people read as sweaty and others as intriguing. In the middle there is an odd, yeasty phase that one perfume writer compared to sourdough or beer. Cedar and cardamom then take over, and the drydown turns cleaner, a dry citrus and cedar accord with only a little sweetness left.

About the original

Jean-Claude Ellena composed Déclaration for Cartier in 1998. Bois de Jasmin describes a transparent, herbal structure over dry, smoky woods. Cartier later released related versions such as Déclaration Essence (2001) and Déclaration Cologne (2010), which tone down the bitter orange and the cumin. This page refers to the original eau de toilette, which Cartier still sells.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Cartier stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

How you take cumin decides it. Men who enjoy spice with a slightly raw, lived-in quality are its natural audience, while a buyer who wants a straightforwardly clean citrus may find the first stage too pungent.

Notes: Bitter Orange, Bergamot, Birch, Juniper, Artemisia, Cardamom, Cedar, Vetiver, Oakmoss

Bitter orange and bergamot lead, sharpened by artemisia and juniper, with birch adding a faintly smoky note. Cumin sits just under the citrus.

Cardamom comes forward as the citrus fades, a cool spice that pairs with cedar. For a while the composition has a yeasty, bread-like side.

The base is dry: cedar and vetiver over oakmoss, with the cumin mostly gone and a faintly sweet citrus lingering on top.

Which Déclaration is this based on?

The original Cartier Déclaration eau de toilette from 1998, not later flankers such as Déclaration Cologne or Déclaration Essence, which smell noticeably different.

Does Déclaration smell of cumin?

Yes. Cumin is missing from some published notes lists, but Now Smell This and Bois de Jasmin both describe it, especially in the first stage, where it gives the bitter orange a sweaty, spicy edge.
