Archives 69, inspired by Etat Libre d'Orange Archives 69 (2011)

Mandarin and pink berries make a zesty opening, quickly given a peppery, faintly metallic bite by pepper leaves. Prune and a vanilla-orchid accord bring a jammy, honeyed sweetness to the middle, and incense threads smoke through it. Camphor, the cooling note familiar from mothballs and chest rubs, keeps the sweetness in check, and patchouli and musk settle it into a hazy finish.

About the original

Etat Libre d'Orange released Archives 69 in early 2011 for its fifth anniversary, naming it after the house's Paris shop at 69 rue des Archives. Christine Nagel is credited as perfumer by Escentual and Now Smell This. The brand describes it as fruity and spicy, with camphor, pink pepper and incense softened by orchid and sweet prune. Some fragrance references give 2010, but the earliest coverage we found dates from 2011.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Etat Libre d'Orange stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Office wear is where Now Smell This's reviewer saw it, finding it friendly rather than overpowering. The camphor is the sticking point: some wearers find it medicinal, so it may not suit those who want a straightforward fruity amber.
