Le Lion
49,00 €
Olivier Polge’s 2020 solar amber from Les Exclusifs, a tribute to Coco’s astrological sign. Bergamot and lemon over labdanum, patchouli, amber and sandalwood. Rebuilt at 40 percent oil.
Coco’s Astrological Sign, Translated into Amber
Le Lion arrived in 2020 as one of Olivier Polge’s most distinctive additions to the Les Exclusifs collection. The brief was a tribute to Gabrielle Chanel’s lifelong fascination with the lion, her astrological sign (she was a Leo, born August 19) and a symbol that appeared throughout her apartments and personal mythology. Polge built the composition as a luminous amber: bergamot and lemon giving a sparkling citrus opening, labdanum and patchouli grounding the heart, and a base of amber, sandalwood, and vanilla creating a warm voluptuous drydown. It became one of the most loved Les Exclusifs of the modern era. Our interpretation respects its solar amber character.
How It Smells
The opening is unexpectedly bright for an amber composition, bergamot and lemon leading with a clear citrus sparkle that lasts longer than most ambery scents allow. Within fifteen minutes the heart settles: labdanum brings its characteristic balsamic resinous warmth, patchouli adds an earthy depth, and the perfume begins to reveal its true character. The base is where Le Lion earns its reputation. Amber dominates, rendered as luminous rather than heavy, with sandalwood adding creamy wood support, vanilla rounding the finish, and a soft musk smoothing everything. The overall impression is solar amber, golden in feel rather than dark, polished and confident in the niche Chanel manner.
The Notes
Top: bergamot, lemon, citruses.
Heart: labdanum, patchouli.
Base: amber, sandalwood, vanilla, musk.
How Our Version Compares
Solar amber compositions like Le Lion are demanding because the labdanum amber accord needs to read warm without going heavy, golden without going gourmand. Our European Union production at 40 percent perfume oil concentration uses amber and labdanum materials calibrated for that balance. The bright citrus opening sparkles cleanly, the labdanum patchouli heart holds its character, and the amber sandalwood drydown lingers with the luminous warmth that defines Polge’s original.
Common Questions
How does it compare to other Les Exclusifs ambers?
Le Lion is the most luminous and citrus-led of the Les Exclusifs ambery compositions. Coromandel is denser and more resinous. 1932 sits cooler and more floral. Le Lion holds the bright golden middle ground.
Is it unisex in practice?
Officially yes, and it wears that way. The amber labdanum signature reads beautifully on any wearer; the niche positioning sidesteps the gendered categorisation that would otherwise apply.
Best season?
Year round, but autumn and winter suit it especially. The amber warmth has room to develop in cooler weather. Spring and summer wear is fine; the bright citrus opening keeps it from feeling out of season.
How does it project?
Moderate to strong in the first two hours, then settling into a warmer skin scent. The 40 percent oil concentration extends the amber drydown considerably, especially noticeable on cool coat collars.
