Saffron sets the tone from the first spray: dry, faintly leathery and a little metallic, cut with the fruit-skin tartness of blackcurrant. Iris and rose arrive underneath and give the middle a cool, powdered polish. As the spice settles, guaiac wood brings a smoky, resinous dryness while tonka bean adds a rounded sweetness reminiscent of almond and hay. Its overall shape is ambery and spiced, with the flowers acting as a cushion rather than the main subject.

About the original

Carolina Herrera released Saffron Lazuli in 2020 as part of Herrera Confidential, the house's private collection, which sits apart from its designer lines. The name refers to lapis lazuli, the deep blue the house treats as its own colour. No perfumer has been named in official or press sources. Carolina Herrera's description centres the composition on saffron, and its longer text also mentions cardamom, orris root and vanilla.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Carolina Herrera stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Wearers who already enjoy saffron-led ambers will recognise the territory, though here iris and rose keep it more composed than smoky. Tonka gives a gentle sweetness without tipping into dessert. Its leathery saffron edge can feel austere to someone expecting a plain floral.

Blackcurrant opens with a tart, slightly green fruitiness, and saffron lies over it with its dry, spiced, almost suede-like tone.

In the heart, iris adds a rooty, powdery coolness and rose a fuller petal note. Together they smooth the saffron without hiding it.

Guaiac wood and tonka bean form the base: smoky wood on one side, a mellow almond-like sweetness on the other.
