Coromandel Parfum

Coromandel Parfum, inspired by Chanel Coromandel (2007)

Patchouli forms the backbone, but it has been polished smooth, with a cocoa-like darkness instead of damp earth. Frankincense threads a dry, smoky line through it. Benzoin, a balsamic resin that smells of vanilla and toffee, joins vanilla itself in the base, and some descriptions add a white chocolate accord. The texture is velvety and slightly powdery.

About the original

Chanel launched Coromandel in 2007 in Les Exclusifs de Chanel, created by Jacques Polge and Christopher Sheldrake and inspired by Gabrielle Chanel's Coromandel lacquer screens. It began as an Eau de Toilette and was reworked as an Eau de Parfum in 2016. In 2019 Chanel added a separate Coromandel Parfum by Olivier Polge, now listed as Extrait de Parfum, whose description stresses musk, frankincense and labdanum. Both are currently sold; the Eau de Parfum is the reference for this page.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Chanel stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Dense, sweet and resinous, it is a scent for people who like amber and incense. Patchouli stays prominent throughout, which is the main thing to check before buying.

The opening is patchouli with frankincense, dark and slightly smoky but without a musty edge.

In the heart benzoin and vanilla add a resinous sweetness, and the white chocolate accord gives a cocoa-powder impression.

The drydown stays ambery and powdery, with patchouli still present beneath the sweetness.

Is this Coromandel Eau de Parfum or Coromandel Parfum?

Our reference is Coromandel Eau de Parfum. Chanel also sells a Coromandel Parfum (Extrait de Parfum, 2019), which reviewers find richer and more resinous.

Is Coromandel similar to Le Lion de Chanel?

Both are ambers from Les Exclusifs. Coromandel centres on patchouli, benzoin and incense, while Le Lion is built on labdanum and patchouli lifted by lemon and bergamot.
