Coromandel takes its name from the ornate Chinese lacquered screens that decorated Gabrielle Chanel’s Paris apartment. Released in 2007 as part of the original Les Exclusifs collection and revisited in 2016 as an Eau de Parfum (with a Parfum version following), Coromandel is one of the most distinctive ambery woody compositions in modern niche perfumery. Jacques Polge built it around patchouli, frankincense, and benzoin, creating a deep voluptuous embrace that Chanel itself describes as “exotic, exquisite enchantment.” It became a cult favourite and remains one of the bestselling Les Exclusifs. How It Smells

The opening is unexpected for an ambery oriental, bitter orange and citrus notes giving an initial brightness that quickly gives way to the perfume’s true character. Within ten minutes the heart settles: patchouli takes a leading role, rendered as polished and slightly creamy rather than earthy, with orris root adding a cool grey powdered character and rose and jasmine threading through quietly. The base is the perfume’s calling card. Frankincense gives a smoky resinous depth, benzoin contributes its characteristic vanilla-balsamic warmth, amber wraps everything in luminous heat, and a faint white chocolate accord (often debated by reviewers) lingers in the deeper drydown. It reads luxurious, slightly mysterious, decidedly grown up.
