Outlands, inspired by Amouage Outlands (2024)

Lemon dominates the start of Outlands, shot through with spice: cardamom, Sichuan pepper (citrusy and tingling rather than hot) and elemi, a resin with a lemony, peppery smell. Then the climate changes. Patchouli takes over the heart with a humid, green earthiness, and rose, saffron and cumin move through it, the cumin giving a salty, skin-like edge. A dark balsamic amber follows, with birch adding a smoky, leathery note and oud a dry woodiness.

About the original

The scent belongs to Amouage's Essences collection, a trio with Reasons and Lustre revealed at TFWA Cannes in October 2024 and sold in travel retail from that November. Cécile Zarokian composed it. The brand calls the concentration Essence de Parfum, around 30% oils, which are aged for six months with sandalwood chips and oak. Retailers often list it as an extrait, and at least one gives 2025 as the launch year.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Amouage stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Cumin and birch are the deciding factors: both are noticeable, and buyers who find cumin sweaty or smoke heavy should sample with care. For lovers of dense, resinous ambers with an earthy patchouli core, it offers more texture than most.

Lemon and bergamot open with cardamom, Sichuan pepper, elemi and a first touch of frankincense.

The heart is patchouli-led, green and damp, with rose, orange blossom, geranium and cumin, while davana, anise and coriander add a herbal, faintly fruity spice.

Benzoin, labdanum and opoponax build a deep amber base, with ambergris, vanilla, birch, musks and oud beneath.

Does Outlands smell of cumin?

Yes. Cumin sits in the heart with rose and saffron and adds a slightly salty, skin-like edge. It is part of the character rather than a trace.

What is an Essence de Parfum?

It is Amouage's own name for the concentration of its Essences collection, about 30% oils in the original, which retailers often list as an extrait. Our version is an eau de parfum.
