Legacy Of Petra, inspired by Penhaligon's Legacy of Petra (2022)

Bergamot opens Legacy of Petra, but only briefly: myrrh soon takes over, a resin with a bitter, faintly medicinal smokiness. Fennel and liquorice give it an aniseed edge, while green tea and rosemary keep the middle dry and herbal. Incense rises as it settles. Vanilla rounds off a woody-amber base without turning it into a dessert.

About the original

Penhaligon's announced Legacy of Petra in August 2022 as the next Trade Routes release after Constantinople, sold as a 100 ml eau de parfum. A launch review credits the composition to Nathalie Gracia-Cetto. The brand's own description is brief, moving from bergamot and balsam to a woody amber with myrrh. That same review found it bolder than much of the house's recent output, picking out the bitter myrrh, a striking pepper note and a pointed liquorice facet.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Penhaligon's stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Lovers of odd, characterful resins are its natural audience, more than anyone after a crowd-pleaser. The myrrh is bitter and the liquorice pointed, so it can feel austere to a buyer who wants vanilla to lead.

Notes: Bergamot, Fennel, Green Tea, Myrrh, Liquorice, Rosemary, Liquorice Wood, Incense, Belambre, Vanilla

The top is citrus and herbs: bergamot first, then rosemary and the fresh, aniseed lift of fennel. Green tea adds a dry, slightly tannic note.

Myrrh forms the core, with liquorice and liquorice wood bringing a dark, rooty sweetness that stays more savoury than candied.

Incense and vanilla carry the drydown, settling into a woody-amber finish.

We have not been able to confirm whether Penhaligon's still produces it.

Is Legacy of Petra sweet?

Not especially. Vanilla and liquorice give some roundness, but myrrh, incense and herbs keep the overall effect dry and bitter.
