Reine de Nuit

Reine de Nuit, inspired by Byredo Reine de Nuit (2015)

Saffron gives the first breath a leathery, faintly metallic spice, and blackcurrant sets a dark, tart fruit beside it. Rose arrives quickly and holds the centre, yet incense smoke runs through it, so it never reads as a garden flower. Lower down, patchouli lends an earthy depth while ambrette, a seed with a musky, slightly pear-like smell, smooths the edges. An amber accord keeps the base rounded and dense.

About the original

Byredo launched Reine de Nuit in November 2015 as one of three perfume extracts in its Night Veils collection, alongside Casablanca Lily and Midnight Candy. The line was relaunched in new bottles in January 2020, with Sellier (formerly La Selle) joining Casablanca Lily and Reine de Nuit. Press coverage of the 2020 relaunch presented it as a revival of the traditions of oriental perfumery. Other houses have used the name Reine de Nuit; our reference is the Byredo extract.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Byredo stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Wearers drawn to rose with smoke and spice in it will feel at home. Byredo placed it in a collection built around the night, and its dense, resinous texture fits that framing. Saffron is noticeable from the start and incense follows in the heart, which may not please anyone hoping for a fresh, dewy rose.

Is this Byredo's Reine de Nuit or another brand's?

It is inspired by the Byredo extract from the Night Veils collection (2015). Other houses have released perfumes under the same name, and those are different scents.

Is Reine de Nuit more rose or more incense?

Rose is the main note, with incense running through the heart and saffron on top. The result is a smoky rose rather than a pure incense scent.

What concentration is the Byredo original?

Byredo sells Reine de Nuit as a perfume extract in its Night Veils line. Ours is an eau de parfum, inspired by that extract.
