Vanilla Powder, inspired by Matière Première Vanilla Powder (2023)

The vanilla here is deep and dark, the absolute rather than the sugary bakery version, and the composition plays it against a pale, powdery haze. Heliotropin, a material with an almond-like, floury softness, does much of that work. Coconut gives a milky roundness, while palo santo (a South American wood with a gentle, resinous smell) adds a dry line beneath. White musk and lactonic notes, which smell of milk and skin, keep it smooth to the end.

About the original

Aurélien Guichard, the perfumer who founded Matière Première, launched Vanilla Powder as an eau de parfum in October 2023. It uses Fair For Life certified vanilla from Madagascar. The brand describes it as vanilla absolute contrasted with an overdose of white powdery notes. An Extrait de Parfum followed, together with body and hair products, and both concentrations remain on sale.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Matière Première stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Coconut and powder are the two things to check before buying. Wearers who enjoy plush, comforting vanillas will find it gentle and easy, whereas a buyer who dislikes powdery textures may want something drier.

Vanilla absolute appears at once, dark and resinous, met straight away by a powdery haze of heliotropin.

Coconut and lactonic notes give the middle a milky, rounded texture, with palo santo adding a light woody dryness.

White musk carries the finish, keeping the vanilla clean and powdery rather than sticky.

Does Vanilla Powder smell of coconut?

Yes, coconut is part of the composition and gives it a milky roundness. It supports rather than leads, but people who dislike coconut will notice it.

Is this the Eau de Parfum or the Extrait?

It is inspired by the original Vanilla Powder Eau de Parfum from 2023. Matière Première also sells a more concentrated Extrait de Parfum.

Is it a boozy or caramel vanilla?

Neither. The vanilla is set against powdery and musky notes, so it reads lighter and drier than rum or caramel styles.
