The Rum-Cocoa-Vanilla Spectacle, 2021

Vanilla Diorama joined La Collection Privée in 2021, composed by Francois Demachy as one of Dior’s most ambitious gourmand compositions. The brief was a theatrical vanilla framed by rum, cocoa, cardamom and pink pepper, with citrus opening and patchouli grounding the drydown. The “diorama” in the name suggests the layered theatrical quality Demachy built into the composition: each note appears like a layered scene rather than blending into a single gourmand impression. The result reads luxurious and slightly playful, distinctly different from simpler vanilla compositions. The fragrance remains active in the niche Dior catalogue and represents one of the most popular recent additions. Officially unisex. Our interpretation respects the layered gourmand character.

How It Smells

The opening is bright and slightly spicy, lemon and orange leading with citrus lift, pink pepper adding a quick warm spicy bite, and cardamom contributing aromatic spice depth. Within fifteen minutes the heart unfolds with theatrical complexity: orchid takes a leading role with its slightly chocolate-edged floral character, cocoa adds warm chocolate depth without going overtly gourmand, and rum threads through the middle with its trademark slightly boozy fermented sweetness that distinguishes Vanilla Diorama from simpler vanilla compositions. The base is the perfume’s iconic anchor. Vanilla provides the dominant warm gourmand depth (rich and slightly buttery), patchouli grounds the composition with earthy modern polish, and the cocoa rum threads continue into the drydown. The overall impression is theatrical vanilla luxury.

The Notes

Top: lemon, orange, pink pepper, cardamom.
Heart: orchid, cocoa, rum.
Base: vanilla, patchouli.

How Our Version Compares

Complex vanilla compositions like Vanilla Diorama reward concentration because the rum cocoa vanilla patchouli interplay needs proper density to develop with depth. Our European Union production at 40 percent perfume oil concentration handles the composition well, with the citrus pink pepper opening sparkling cleanly, the cocoa rum heart holding through the wearing, and the vanilla patchouli drydown lasting well into the next day on clothing.

Common Questions

Is it really unisex?
Yes, in the La Collection Privée tradition. The cardamom rum cocoa support keeps the composition from reading rigidly feminine; the niche positioning operates outside standard gendered categories. Many men favour it as an evening signature.

Does it smell like dessert?
Not exactly. The rum cocoa vanilla register is gourmand but kept restrained by the cardamom, pink pepper and patchouli. It reads luxurious vanilla luxury rather than overt dessert sweetness, which keeps it appropriate for evening dinner occasions without feeling juvenile.

How does it compare to other vanilla orientals?
More layered than most. Less candy-sweet than Mugler Angel, less almond-led than Dior Hypnotic Poison, more complex than Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille. Vanilla Diorama sits in the haute parfumerie polished gourmand register.

How long does it last?
Ten to twelve hours at our concentration, with the vanilla patchouli drydown lingering on clothing well into the next day. Dense gourmand compositions at our oil load are among the longer-lasting fragrances in our catalogue.
