Scarlet Poppy Intense, inspired by Jo Malone London Scarlet Poppy Cologne Intense (2021)

Ambrette, a seed with a musky, faintly fruity powderiness, wraps the scent from the very start. The poppy accord in the heart is velvety rather than green, deepened by iris, which adds a cool, rooty powder. Tonka bean then brings almond, vanilla and a shade of tobacco, and the sweetness grows as it dries down. The brand calls the result ravishing and moreish.

About the original

Scarlet Poppy was announced in November 2020 as a new Cologne Intense and released in January 2021. The brand says it drew on oriental poppies, Papaver orientale, from the steppes of southwest Asia. It is sold as a regular item in the Cologne Intense range, including the Cologne Intense gift collection and discovery set. The 2020 press release also mentioned barley and a fig accord, which are absent from the current note list.

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Jo Malone London stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Powder and sweetness sit at the centre, so a wearer who likes iris and tonka will feel at home. Those after a light, dewy poppy should look to Poppy & Barley instead.
