The Story Behind the Scent

Dior Addict launched in 2002, composed by Thierry Wasser, who later became Guerlain’s in-house perfumer. The brief was a confidently sensual oriental floral for a younger audience, built around the night flower (queen of the night), jasmine sambac, mandarin, and a base of tonka bean and vanilla. The composition became one of Dior’s most successful feminine launches of the early 2000s and spawned an extended family of flankers. Dior reformulated the perfume in 2014 under Francois Demachy with a slightly different note structure, but the original 2002 character is what most wearers remember as Dior Addict. Our interpretation respects that profile.

How Our Version Compares to the Original

Oriental florals like Addict reward concentration because the white floral heart and vanilla base both need proper density to develop fully. Our European Union production at 40 percent perfume oil concentration handles the composition well, with the mandarin night-flower opening sparkling cleanly and the vanilla tonka sandalwood drydown lasting well into the next day. How it Smells

The opening is fresh and slightly green, mandarin orange leading with a quick dewy leaf accord that distinguishes Addict from heavier oriental openings. Within fifteen minutes the night-blooming florals appear: queen of the night (a tropical white flower) takes a leading role with its narcotic creamy character, jasmine sambac adds depth, and rose threads through the heart with a soft floral support. The base is where Addict earns its reputation. Bourbon vanilla provides warm gourmand depth, tonka bean adds soft hay-like sweetness, sandalwood gives creamy wood structure, and silk tree flower (mimosa) lingers as a faint powdered floral. It reads sensual and confident, polished in the early 2000s Dior manner.

What is queen of the night?
A nickname for several tropical white flowers that bloom only at night, with intensely sweet narcotic floral character. Addict’s heart uses this category of accord rather than a single botanical, building the night-blooming floral effect that gives the perfume its identity.

Best season and occasion?
Autumn and winter, evenings especially. The vanilla tonka sandalwood base reads at its best in cooler weather. Daytime wear is possible with restraint, but Addict is naturally suited to occasions that welcome a touch of presence.
