Aromatics In Black, inspired by Clinique Aromatics in Black (2015)

An accord of plum leaf, green with a faint fruitiness, meets tangy pink grapefruit and bergamot at the start. Osmanthus then gives the heart its apricot-and-leather tone, a flower whose scent sits between ripe stone fruit and tea, joined by jasmine and neroli. Myrrh brings a bittersweet, slightly smoky resin to the base. Vetiver keeps it rooted, and tonka bean, which smells of almond and hay, adds the final sweetness.

About the original

Clinique released Aromatics in Black in 2015, a year after Aromatics in White, as a flanker of Aromatics Elixir (1971). The brand calls it a bold, sophisticated amber with exotic floral notes. Perfume writers found little of the Elixir's herbal chypre structure in it and more of a fruity floriental. A limited Aromatics Black Cherry followed in 2016, and Aromatics in Black itself is still sold by Clinique.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Clinique stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Fans of Aromatics Elixir should treat this as a cousin rather than a darker copy. It sits on the sweet, resinous side of the family, with osmanthus up front. The herbal, chypre dryness of Aromatics Elixir is largely absent here.

Aromatics Elixir (1971) is a herbal chypre. Aromatics in Black is sweeter and fruitier, an amber floral with osmanthus and myrrh.

Is this the same as Aromatics Black Cherry?

No. Black Cherry was a separate limited flanker from 2016; this page is the 2015 Aromatics in Black.

Is it smoky?

Only slightly. Myrrh adds a faint smoky resin to the base, but the fruity floral notes dominate.
