Aromatics Elixir, inspired by Clinique Aromatics Elixir (1971)

An herbal, almost chamomile-tea note greets you first, unusual in a floral perfume. Rose and orange blossom rise through it, then jasmine and ylang ylang make the heart full and heady. Patchouli, vetiver and oakmoss give the base its earthy depth, which is what makes it a chypre: a structure built on moss and woods beneath the flowers. It stays dense from start to finish and diffuses strongly.

About the original

Clinique launched Aromatics Elixir in 1971 as its first fragrance, when the brand was known for fragrance-free skincare. Bernard Chant of IFF composed it, and Clinique says the formula draws on more than 700 ingredients. The brand has long positioned it for individualists rather than as a crowd-pleaser. Aromatics in Black and Aromatics in White came later as separate variations; this page is inspired by the original.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Clinique stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Confidence helps with this one. It is heavy, herbal and mossy and divides opinion sharply, so anyone used to fresh or fruity florals should expect something very different. Lovers of classic chypres and patchouli tend to find it compelling.
