The Story Behind the Scent

Bernard Chant composed Aromatics Elixir for Clinique in 1971, and the result became one of the most distinctive and polarising feminine launches of the 1970s. The brief was a powerful aromatic chypre built around chamomile, rose, jasmine and ylang ylang in the heart, with patchouli, oakmoss, vetiver and labdanum providing a deep resinous base. The composition broke new ground by combining herbal aromatic notes with a heavy chypre structure, creating something simultaneously polished and confidently strange. Despite (or because of) its polarising character, Aromatics Elixir has remained in continuous production for over five decades and continues to attract devoted followers who consider it the greatest American perfume of the 20th century. How Our Version Compares to the Original

Classical chypres like Aromatics Elixir reward concentration because the patchouli oakmoss labdanum base needs density to develop fully. Modern reformulations have softened the oakmoss within IFRA limits. Our European Union production at 40 percent perfume oil concentration preserves the original character, with the aromatic herbal opening sparkling cleanly, the floral chypre heart holding through the wearing, and the patchouli oakmoss drydown lasting well into the next day on clothing.

How it Smells

Within fifteen minutes the chypre heart unfolds: rose takes a leading floral role rendered deep and slightly jammy, jasmine adds creamier white floral support, ylang ylang contributes soft exotic floral depth, and geranium provides green floral edge that ties the composition to its aromatic opening.
