Carat

Carat, inspired by Cartier Carat (2018)

Carat was conceived as light passing through a diamond, with seven flowers standing for the seven colours of the spectrum: violet, lily, hyacinth, ylang-ylang, narcissus, honeysuckle and tulip. The opening is clear and dewy, slightly green and slightly fruity. It is mildly sweet rather than sugary. Later it gains a little depth and a trace of powder while keeping its spring-like freshness.

About the original

Mathilde Laurent composed Carat for Cartier in 2018. The diamond theme ties the scent to the jeweller's own trade, with each flower mapped to a colour of the rainbow. Published note lists sometimes add pear, bergamot, mimosa and white musk to the official seven flowers. Baiser Volé (2011) is the house's earlier floral by the same perfumer, built around lily alone.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Cartier stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Its pale, gentle character is that of a spring floral, and it is reviewed as one. It has little depth or richness, so lovers of heavy ambers and woods may find it slight.

The first minutes are dewy and luminous, with hyacinth and green tones giving a crisp edge.

Narcissus, lily, honeysuckle, ylang-ylang and tulip fill out the heart as a mixed spring bouquet.

In the drydown the bouquet turns a little rounder and faintly powdery, still fresh and floral.

Baiser Volé focuses on a single flower, lily. Carat blends seven flowers into a mixed bouquet.
