Coco Noir arrived in 2012, twenty-eight years after the original Coco, composed by Jacques Polge with Christopher Sheldrake. The brief was a darker, more nocturnal interpretation of the Coco idea, inspired by Gabrielle Chanel’s evening hours and her well-documented love of Venice. Where the 1984 Coco glows with warm spice and amber, Coco Noir descends into something more shadowed: grapefruit and bergamot at the opening, rose and jasmine through the heart, and a base of patchouli, sandalwood, vanilla, and a soft narcissus that gives the composition its trademark mysterious quality. It became one of the more polarising Chanel feminines, beloved by those who want depth and presence. Our interpretation respects the original’s intentional darkness.

How It Smells

The opening is bright but slightly bitter, grapefruit and bergamot giving immediate citrus lift with a quick geranium note adding a slightly green floral edge. Within ten minutes the heart appears: rose dominates with a deeper, slightly jammy character, jasmine adds creamy depth, and a touch of narcissus contributes a soft floral mystery that sets Coco Noir apart from standard feminine launches.
