Beyond Rose, inspired by Clinique Beyond Rose (2014)

Rose dominates from start to finish, moving from a light petal note to something velvety and deep as the resins come through. White pepper and maté, a dried green leaf with a tea-like smell, frame the first minutes. Osmanthus adds an apricot-leather nuance to the rose and freesia lifts it slightly. Underneath, amber, labdanum, styrax and benzoin give a dark, balsamic base, the kind of resin warmth you find in Middle Eastern rose perfumes.

About the original

Alienor Massenet created Beyond Rose for Clinique in 2014. It launched as a Harrods exclusive, and fragrance references note it was designed primarily for the Middle Eastern market, and it is quite unlike Clinique's better-known Happy and Aromatics lines. Retailers sold it both as an eau de parfum and labelled as a parfum spray. Clinique no longer lists it, and it is reported as discontinued by fragrance databases.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Clinique stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Cold evenings in winter show it at its best. It is a substantial rose with resinous depth, and some people find the opening slightly medicinal, so it is best tested by anyone who prefers airy, dewy roses.

Top notes: White Pepper, Maté

Heart notes: Rose Oil, Rose Absolute, Osmanthus, Freesia

Base notes: Amber, Labdanum, Styrax, Benzoin

The start pairs white pepper with maté, so the rose arrives with a dry, spiced and faintly herbal frame.

Rose oil and rose absolute form the core, supported by osmanthus and freesia. The flower deepens rather than fades as it settles.

Labdanum, styrax and benzoin give the base a balsamic, slightly smoky resin tone, rounded by amber.

Is Clinique Beyond Rose still available?

It no longer appears in Clinique's fragrance range, and databases report it as discontinued. Clinique has not published a statement.

Is Beyond Rose sweet?

Not in a sugary way. The sweetness comes from amber and benzoin resins, and white pepper keeps the opening dry.

What is labdanum?

A resin from the rockrose shrub with a dark, leathery, amber-like smell. Here it gives the rose its depth.

Is Clinique Beyond Rose coming back?

So far, we have found no announcement from Clinique that it will return. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
